About

Parks and playgrounds are a fun way to let the kids blow off some steam but with adventurous toddlers or preschoolers in tow sometimes a bit of pre-planning is required! Wellington has an abundance of beautiful parks and kid's play areas, in fact the city boasts over 105 playgrounds! 

We’ve put together a list of our top fenced playgrounds in Wellington city to keep your little ones safe (and contained).

Wadestown Play Centre Play Area

Location:
111 Wadestown Road, Wadestown

Wellington Multiples hosts a monthly playgroup here on Tuesdays, however the playground is also available for public use at any time. Wadestown Play Centre Play Area is fully fenced, and is suitable for children of all ages. There is a range of play equipment, including a sandpit under a shade sail, 2 play modules with slides, monkey bars, inclusive carousel, mini trampoline, 2 springers, swing set including basket seat, bowl spinner & basketball key.  A public toilet is a short walk away on Wadestown road, by the Wadestown shops.

Tip: Bring a snack and enjoy the shade-covered picnic tables.

Haitaitai Community House Waipapa Play Area

Location:
112 Waipapa Road, Hataitai

Don’t miss this little gem in the heart of Hataitai. This playground has all the equipment to keep your little ones happy, including two baby swings, a toddler-sized fort, a see-saw, and sandpit (with shade cover). Bring a ball to kick around on the adjacent lawn of the Hataitai Bowling Club. There is plenty of street parking on Waipapa Road.

Tip: Bring toys for the sandpit.

Kilbirnie Play Area

Location:
620 Evans Bay Parade, Kilbirnie

This playground is located next to the Kilbirnie Plunket rooms, Ruth Gotlieb Library, and Kilbirnie Recreation Centre. It has a large fenced area for toddlers complete with a climbing fort, see-saw, slide, and trees for climbing. The main park features swings, a climbing fort, a small flying fox, monkey bars, and a slide.

Tip: Mature trees provide excellent shade for the park but it also means the park can be a little chilly. Bring a jumper (or jacket in winter).

Wellington Botanic Garden Play Area

Location:
Kelburn, Wellington 6012

A visit to the playground at Wellington Botanic Gardens is a highlight for many children. The play area has been newly upgraded in 2024, and features a modern dual flying fox, a large climbable tower and three long slides. Synthetic safety surfacing has been installed on the more accessible equipment, which includes a transferable carousel, talk tubes, musical panels, and a sensory play module. The fenced area is suitable for all ages and looks down onto an all-ages swing set. Pack a picnic and spend a few hours exploring this treasured Wellington park.

Tip: Take a ride on the Cable Car from Lambton Quay. The playground is a 5-10 minutes walk from the terminal.

Constable Street Play Area

Location:
9 Constable Street, Newtown

This small park is situated next to Newtown Library and features a fort, bridge, and slide. There are no swings so there’s no fighting over whose turn it is! Public toilets and a drinking fountain are close by. The vibrant cafes and shops nearby make this a great place to spend a day out. 

Tip: There are 20-minute car parks available on Constable Street.

Te Kohanga Manaaki - Petone Playscape

Location:
72 Cuba Street, Petone

​Petone Playscape is a fully fenced play area that has been designed for tamariki 5 and under. 

Tip: There is a coffee cart (Hamodava) on Tuesday - Saturday from 8:30am - 3:30pm. Get amongst it!
